Glen Garry Native Pinewoods
Special offer - 20% off!
Glen Garry weeks are located in the scenic Invergarry area, in between Loch Garry, Loch Lochy and Loch Ness. The beautiful Glen Garry pinewoods are part of the Caledonian Forest Reserves area designated by Europe for special protection and restoration.
Conservation work at Glen Garry is carried out in partnership with Forestry Commission Scotland. We are working at two sites, expanding native pinewoods near the River Garry in the Great Glen, and restoring an ancient oak woodland at Bolinn Hill. Work at both sites includes tree planting, removal of non-native species, stock fence erection, surveying, and monitoring natural regeneration.
Accommodation is at Highgarry Lodges. There are two cosy and spacious wooden cabins each sleeping six, with well-appointed kitchens and bathrooms, and panoramic views across Glen Garry and the surrounding mountains and pine forests. Each chalet contains two doubles and one twin room. On-site laundry and drying facilities are available.
Please bring a sleeping bag.
Opportunities for your day off
Glen Garry is ideally situated in between Loch Ness and Loch Lochy. The Loch Ness visitor centre with its Nessie exhibition in Drumnadrochit is very popular and Urquhart Castle is also nearby. You could take a boat trip on the loch from Fort Augustus or visit the famous Caledonian Canal. The ruins of Invergarry Castle stand in the grounds of Glengarry Castle Hotel and Inverlochy Castle is also nearby.
If you enjoy hiking, the Great Glen Way passes through the area and there are various Munroes (mountain peaks over 3,000 feet in elevation) in the area. The Five Sisters walk at Kintail is also popular. Inverness, the capital of the Highlands, is only 40 miles away and boasts a wealth of attractions.
Please note that the day off is also a day off for the leaders of the week. The minibus may sometimes be available for use as a group but you may need to rely on local transport to reach some of these locations.
We are lucky enough to regularly see golden eagles on Glen Garry weeks and Scottish crossbills and crested tits are also commonly seen. There are red squirrels in the area, as well as otters. Ospreys are sometimes seen during the breeding season.
