Volunteer Work Weeks in the Scottish Highlands 2009

Accommodation

Plodda Lodge

Plodda is one of TFL’s field bases. Set in the woods of Strathglass, Plodda has been renovated to accommodate our Work Week volunteers. It has solid fuel heating from a Rayburn stove, a shower-room, a well-equipped kitchen and large lounge. Sleeping accommodation for the group is in one large bunkroom. The surrounding woodland scenery is spectacular and can be easily accessed with one of the highlights being the 100-foot high Plodda Falls.

Allt Beithe Youth Hostel

The Glen Affric Youth Hostel at Alltbeithe is the most remote of the Scottish hostels and is set in stunning scenery. The Hostel has been renovated but it is still very simple. Power comes from wind-powered electricity and there are fuel-burning stoves heating the main building. There is a common room, large kitchen/dining room, bunkrooms and a shower. Be prepared to share the hostel with walkers passing through the glen. There will be a four mile walk between the car park and the accommodation at the beginning and end of the week.
See the website.

Glen Affric Chalet Park

Accommodation for the 11th April Nursery Week will be in the Glen Affric Chalet Park. This accommodation lies close to some of the most spectacular mountain scenery in Scotland and is situated by the River Glass. The chalets are extremely spacious with three bedrooms, a large lounge/dining room, separate well-equipped kitchen and bathroom with shower. They are all fully heated throughout with electric central heating. On site facilities include a café, launderette and games room. Volunteers will also have access to local facilities and walks, for example to Plodda Falls.

Duirinish Holiday Lodges

Accommodation for the Achnahinich weeks will be in the Duirinish Holiday Lodges near Plockton. We will have the use of two beautiful wooden lodges, which are surrounded by five acres of grass and woodland and are only 2 miles from the village of Plockton. These comfortable lodges sleep six, are fully heated and have well-equipped kitchens, lounge/dining areas and bathrooms. Plockton village, situated on the west coast, is very picturesque, with shops, pubs and cafes. Volunteers will also have the option of going on a boat trip on their day off, making this a popular choice.

Attadale Cottages, Strathcarron

We will have the use of two well-appointed nineteenth century semi-detached cottages, each with bedrooms, kitchens and bathrooms with showers. Attadale is a stunning glen situated west of our work site at Achnashellach. The surrounding hills have some great patches of woodland and the nearby Attadale house has beautiful gardens, which can be explored during time off.

Dundreggan Lodge

Accommodation for the Dundreggan weeks will be in the Dundreggan Lodge. This is Trees for Life’s newest field base and is situated on the southern boundary of Dundreggan Estate, overlooking the River Moriston. The recently converted building has 3 bunkrooms, a well-equipped kitchen, large lounge/dining area and two bath/shower rooms. We also have a drying room! Depending on time of year, volunteers will have the opportunity to explore the estate during their time off.

Flora MacDonald’s Hostel

We will have exclusive use of the cosy Flora MacDonald’s Hostel, which stands in magnificent surroundings at Kilmore in the south end of the island. There are two dorms, a well-equipped kitchen, lounge area and drying room. The hostel is approximately half an hour’s drive from the work site at Kinloch Hills, however some tasks may require a longer drive.

Invermoriston Holiday Chalets

The chalets on this wooded site are attractively positioned above the River Moriston. We have three chalets for our use, which all have well-equipped kitchens, a bathroom with shower and two twin bedrooms. The nearby village of Invermoriston has a village store, craft shop and café as well as local walks.
