First dwarf birch planted out in Glen Affric, May 2011

On 26th May 2011, we carried out the first planting of dwarf birch (Betula nana) in Glen Affric, when 106 plants, grown in our nursery at Plodda Lodge, were planted in small exclosures just beyond the west end of the Coille Ruigh exclosure on Forestry Commission Scotland land in Glen Affric. This was a key step in our Montane Scrub Project, under which we're working to help restore the tree-line montane scrub community that is almost completely absent in Scotland, because of the past history of deforestation and overgrazing by deer and sheep.

Jure Rejec, a journalist from Slovenia, who was covering Trees for Life on assignment for the European Year of Volunteering, joined us for the day.
