Andrena marginata on Succisa pratensis

This rare mining bee (Andrena margaritata) was thought to have been extinct in Scotland since 1947, until it was found in good numbers on Dundreggan in 2007 (although a single individual was seen in Strathspey in 2002).

Gymnosporangium clavariiforme

This rust fungus (Gymnosporangium clavariiforme) fruits in the spring on the stems of juniper on Dundreggan. It releases spores that infect hawthorn, where the fungus grows in a different form on the leaves, before reinfecting juniper again.

There will be lots to see and do for all ages:

  • Kids nature trail

  • Slide show of the bugs and minibeasts found on the Estate

  • Guided walks departing every hour; on the hour from 12 noon onwards - led by local experts who will bring the woodland to life for you, highlighting various aspects of the biodiversity of Dundreggan, including wood ant nests, goat moth trees, rare species associated with aspen trees etc.

Dundreggan is a 10,000 acre estate in Glen Moriston, suited just off the A887, to the west of Loch Ness, on the road to Kyle of Lochalsh.

Directions for how to get there:

From Inverness, follow the A82 road (towards Fort William) as far as Inverrmoriston, and turn right on to the A887 road to Kyle of Lochalsh.

Follow that for about 5 miles to the dam, then for another mile, until you see a small green sign on the right hand side of the road that says Dundreggan Farm, Private Road.

Turn off on to that road and follow it for about 100 yards, where visitors will be directed to the parking area by Trees for Life staff.

For further information, please send an email to: info@treesforlife.org.uk or give us a call on 0845 458 3505.
