The Robert Burns Grove

Join us in planting a Grove of native trees in honour of Robert Burns - acknowledging his love of and connection to the land he celebrated through poetry and song.

He was a great patriot and his love for Scotland has kept alive the belief that we are a Nation of Worth and Honour:

"The Cotter’s Saturday Night."

"From scenes like these, old Scotia’s grandeur springs,
That makes her lov’d at home, rever’d abroad…"

"O Scotia, my dear, my native soil!
For whom my warmest wish to Heaven is sent,
Long may thy hardy sons of rustic toil,
Be blest with health, and peace, and sweet content.”

He was a lover of Nature, feeling compassion for all forms of life.
The trees will encourage a return of wildlife to a natural habitat.
Robert Burns among other things wrote about the mouse, the wounded hare and the deer:

"My Heart's In The Highlands"

“My heart's in the Highlands, my heart is not here
My heart's in the Highlands a-chasing the deer,
A-chasing the wild deer and following the roe
My heart's in the Highlands, wherever I go!”
The violet's for modesty, which weel she fa's to wear."

He was a lover of Nature, and could easily identify Scotland's wild flowers.
The trees will encourage a carpet of flowers to thrive under their shelter.
He wrote, mentioning only a few, of bluebells, the daisy, hawthorn, woodbine, lilies, and the primrose:

"The Posie"

"The woodbine I will pu' when the e'ening star is near,
And the diamond draps o' dew shall be her een sae clear!
The violet's for modesty, which weel she fa's to wear -
And a' to be a posie to my ain dear May! "

"The hawthorn I will pu', wi' its locks o' siller gray,
Where like an aged man, it stands at break o' day;
But the songster's nest within the bush I winna tak away -
And a' to be a posie to my ain dear May! "

Ah, the songster's nest.
He was a lover of Nature, and mentioned many birds.
The trees will encourage a return of birds both large and small to their natural habitat.
Some of the birds which Robert Burns mentions are the linnet,
blackbird, the lapwing, the thrush:

"The Birks Of Aberfeldie"

"The little birdies blythely sing,
While o'er their heads the hazels hing,
Or lightly flit on wanton wing
In the birks of Aberfeldie! "

He was a lover of Nature, and what is more apt for this project than
his love of trees.
Without tree the landscape has little life.
Without trees the landscape is bare.
Without trees the landscape is silent.

One of his enduring legacies was to write a poem titled,
"The Humble Petition of Bruar Water to the Noble Duke of Athole."
This poem is written from the point of view of the river which argues
that its banks need decorative and protective foliage. Burns called the river
"exceedingly picturesque and beautiful" but it needed trees and shrubs.
This suggestion was later acted upon by the Duke.
He encouraged the Duke of Athole to do what "Trees for Life" is doing,

"Would, then, my noble master please
To grant my highest wishes,
He'll shade my banks wi' tow'ring trees
And bonie spreading bushes.

The sober laverock, warbling wild,
Shall to the skies aspire;
The gowdspink, Music's gayest child,
Shall sweetly join the choir;
The blackbird strong, the lintwhite clear,
The mavis mild and mellow,
The robin, pensive Autumn cheer
In all her locks of yellow.

Here shall the shepherd make his seat
To weave his crown of flow'rs;
Or find a shelt'ring, safe retreat
From prone-descending show'rs.

Let lofty firs and ashes cool
My lowly banks o'erspread,
And view, deep-bending in the pool,
Their shadows' wat'ry bed:
Let fragrant birks, in woodbines drest,
My craggy cliffs adorn,
And, for the little songster's nest,
The close embow'ring thorn! "

We know, for certain, that Robert Burns would be behind Trees for Life's important work.
Let us make the Robert Burns Grove worthy of Scotland, worthy of the man himself and worthy of his love of Nature.

    To commemorate the passing of
    the writer and producer of the production
    - Robert Burns, Scotland's Radically Enlighted Poet -
    which was performed at the Edinburgh Festival in the year of "Homecoming" 2009.

    These trees are planted in recognition of “The Radicals” who in this significant year, the Year of Homecoming, presented at the Edinburgh International Festival Fringe the production:

    “Robert Burns – Scotland’s Radically Enlightened Poet”

    Taking our inspiration from the four words inscribed on the mace of the Scottish Parliament:

    Wisdom - Justice - Compassion – Integrity

    May the efforts of Trees For Life in the regeneration of the Caledonian Forest help to reconcile Man’s dominion over Nature… aye, it’s comin’ yet for a’ that…

    “Wi’ plenty o’ sic (such) trees, I trow (trust),
    The World would live in peace, man;
    The sword would help to make a plough,
    The din o’ war would cease, man;
    Like brethren in a common cause,
    We’d on each other smile, man;
    And equal rights and equal laws,
    Would gladden every isle, man.”

    From “The Tree of Liberty” by Robert Burns

    In gratitude and fond memory of Wallace Allen Shaw (31.1.34 – 19.12.10)

    Rosemarie and I and ALL of RT BURNS dedicate this tree to SCOTTISH FIRST MINISTER ALEX SALMOND in honor of the recent announcement for the ROBERT BURNS film staring Scot GERARD BUTLER.

    There Once Was A Dream, A Dream That Was Burns

    Once there was a dream that was Burns and you could only say it in a whisper
    To hope and pray that one day a dream could come true and could be realized
    The distant Ancient Highlands would say his name in a whisper and send it along on the north wind, Burns, Burns, Burns

    Can you hear the name from within the distant fog and spread about the moors
    It is a name that history has written within her book with tears of forbidden love that is for sure

    Love and hate we are told indeed go hand in hand, throughout the ages of time they both indeed span
    Burns is indeed a legend, a myth and is truly more than a mortal man
    His words of love, passion have tested time itself, more than he could have ever planned

    He takes his rightful place as a romantic and can be said he was a realist, far beyond his given time
    His words of passion make you dig down within your heart and soul, you say with a gentle whisper, I wish him to be mine

    Many a fair maiden have fallen under his spell, how many through the years, it is hard to tell
    The promise of true love and devotion pulls at your very soul and is part of the very magic of the spell
    Without his words and touch your body feels like a distant empty shell

    So as you drift through the years remember as it nears your time to pass, there once was a dream, a dream that was Burns and it has been realized

    Now that Dream of Burns has indeed been realized and at long last the legend that is Robert Burns shall be brought to the big screen for all to enjoy.

    To honor Robert Burns:
    "So may, old Scotia's darling hope,
    Your little angel band
    Spring, like their fathers, up to prop
    Their honour'd native land!"

    I dedicate this in honor of Kari and Warren from Sconestone and all the awesome work they are doing with this gesture of paying it forward. I awoke early, as I often did, just before sunrise, to walk by the ocean's edge and greet the new day. As I moved through the morning dawn, I focused on a faint, far away motion. I saw a youth, bending and reaching and flailing arms, dancing on the beach, no doubt in celebration of the perfect day soon to begin. As I approached, I realized that the youth was not dancing to the bay, but rather bending to sift through the debris left by the night's tide, stopping now and then to pick up starfish and then standing, to heave it back into the sea. I asked the youth the purpose of the effort. "The tide has washed the starfish onto the beach and they cannot return to the sea by themselves," the youth replied. "When the sun rises, they will die, unless I throw them back into the sea." As the youth explained, I surveyed the vast expanse of beach, stretching in both directions beyond eyesight. Starfish littered the shore in numbers beyond calculation. The hopelessness of the youth's plan became clear to me and I countered, "But there are more starfish on this beach than you can ever save before the sun is up. Surely you cannot expect to make a difference." The youth paused briefly to consider my words, bent to pick up a starfish and threw it as far as possible. Turning to me he simply said, "I made a difference to that ONE." We keep throwing back the starfish, time and again, realizing that some may wash up to the shore and need to be tossed back into the ocean again. The rewards are realized by recognizing the individual accomplishments. Every so often, we really do make a difference, a life is turned around and that starfish becomes a star Kari and Warren thank you both for making a difference in starting Sconestone From : Sandra (Alexandria) Rosemarie Rounce and all the members of RT Burns Group
