Conclusion
The present study strived to answer the following aims:
1. To assess the natural regeneration of Scots pine in the Coille Ruigh na Cuileige exclosure since the erection of the deer fence in 1990 and the exclusion of herbivores.
2. To identify which biotic and abiotic factors (including altitude, topography, aspect, soil properties, and tree species abundance) are related to the regeneration of Scots pine, hence establishing the suitability of Coille Ruigh for successful natural regeneration.
3. To explore the role of soil for the success of natural regeneration.
From the evidence presented in the results chapter, and taking into consideration the topics covered in the discussion chapter, the three main conclusions derived from this study are:
1. The exclusion of deer had a positive impact on natural regeneration of Scots pine within the exclosure.
2. The distance of a plot to a mature stand of a viable seed source has determined the pattern of natural regeneration within the exclosure.
3. Soil in terms of providing a suitable seed bed plays an important role in Scots pine establishment with soil moisture
content being the property in this specific study that is related most strongly to the natural regeneration of Scots pine.
