Images of the forest Bursting Forth with New Life

After the dormancy of winter, spring bursts forth in the Caledonian Forest in April and May with a profusion of new growth of trees and plants which is vibrant and beautiful in its detail.

These resin-covered buds of a Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris) in Glen Affric are ready for the new growth of spring.

In May, the buds begin to elongate in a process which is known as candling.

The new leaves of oak (Quercus petraea), such as this one near Coire Loch, open later than those of most other trees in Glen Affric.

Covered in dew drops, this new spring shoot of wood horsetail (Equisetum sylvaticum) literally radiates buds in all directions.
