Wild boar (Sus scrofa)Missing Species of the Caledonian Forest

Boar photo

Wild boar are thought to have become extinct in Britain by the 13th century. Attempts at reintroduction were made in the 17th century but these were unsuccessful. Escapes of captive wild boar have occurred since the 1970s, and as a result there are now free living wild boar in Kent, Sussex and Devon.

From 2004 to 2007 Trees for Life was a partner in the Guisachan Wild Boar project, situated on the edge of the Glen Affric National Nature Reserve.
