With the world’s governments preparing to meet at the UN Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen this December, conservation charity Trees for Life is urging people to take positive action to reduce their Christmas carbon footprint by having a dedicated tree or grove planted for family and friends in Scotland’s Caledonian Forest.

The award-winning charity’s Caledonian Forest Christmas Appeal allows people to help tackle climate change while restoring a hugely valuable habitat.

Alan Watson Featherstone, Executive Director of Trees for Life, said: “This December the eyes of the world will be on Copenhagen, hoping for an effective global deal on climate change.

“In addition to international agreements, we all need to do what we can personally to tackle this unprecedented threat. By having a dedicated tree or grove planted for loved ones, people can replace the carbon footprint and packaging of many presents with an environmentally-friendly gift that will last for Christmases for many decades to come.”

Mr Featherstone added: “At Christmas, millions of young trees are cut down to be used in people’s living rooms. In contrast, having a dedicated tree planted in the Caledonian Forest provides a simple and practical solution for anyone who wants to take a positive step this Christmas to address the issue of climate change.”

The Caledonian Forest is home to a unique range of wildlife, from red squirrels and pine martens to wood ants. Today only one per cent of the original forest survives.

Single trees with an A4 personalised certificate cost £15. Groves of eight trees cost £50, including a certificate and a personalised web page on Trees for Life’s website. Additional trees can be added for £5 each. Certificates for orders received before December 10th will arrive before Christmas.

The charity also offers high quality photographic products printed on recycled paper, including packs of winter greetings cards (£5) featuring scenes of the Caledonian Forest in snow, and a 2010 Engagement Diary (£12.95) and Wall Calendar (£9.95), both of which feature outstanding photographs of the trees and forests of the world. A special Christmas gift membership of Trees for Life is also available (£33).
