Edinburgh cab company EdinaCars is establishing its own expanding grove of native trees in the Caledonian Forest in the Scottish Highlands, boosting the award-winning work of conservation charity Trees for Life.
The new grove is part of a Trees for Life scheme which allows individuals and companies to have dedicated trees or groves planted for themselves or as gifts - supporting forest restoration, creating a fantastic habitat for wildlife and helping to tackle climate change.
Alan Watson Featherstone, Trees for Life Executive Director, said: "We are extremely grateful to Edina Cars for setting up this grove. The Caledonian Forest is Scotland's equivalent of a rainforest and every tree planted makes a real difference to securing its future."
Kristine Simpson, Co-Owner of Edina Cars, said: "As Edinburgh's first carbon neutral cab company, we are proud to support Trees for Life's conservation work. We offset emissions from all our vehicles and office by planting trees and engaging in energy saving projects worldwide, at no extra cost to our customers.
"Also we recently purchased Toyota Prius Hybrids which have extremely low CO2 emissions, and use recycled products whenever possible."
Edina Cars has introduced a state-of-the-art system - Cordic cPAQ - that enables it to reduce non-paid miles by allocating the closest vehicle to the pick-up location, and by automatically choosing the most efficient route to the pick-up point and destination. This reduces mileage and therefore fuel consumption and CO2 emissions.
The Caledonian Forest originally covered much of the Scottish Highlands. Today, following centuries of overgrazing and timber production, only one per cent of the forest survives.
People and companies wanting to make a positive, personal difference to the environment while enjoying an inspiring visit to the wild Highlands can also join Trees for Life's acclaimed Conservation Volunteer Weeks. These suit all abilities and anyone over 18 years old can take part.
