Moray-based conservation charity Trees for Life is inviting local residents to a free open day at its Dundreggan Estate in Glen Moriston, to the west of Loch Ness, on Sunday 7th June 2009, from 10am.

The day will feature refreshments from 10am, entertainment for children provided by environmental education charity Wild Things!, information and displays on Trees for Life's work and plans, and opportunities to explore the Dundreggan Estate.

Guided tours of varying lengths and for differing abilities will run between 11.00am and 1.30pm. People are asked to bring suitable footwear and clothing.

Trees for Life's £1.65 million purchase of the 10,000 acre estate last summer was a milestone in the charity's history and was one of the largest areas of land in the UK bought for forest restoration. Plans include re-connecting the ancient Caledonian Forest between Glen Moriston and Glen Affric by the planting of half a million native trees, as well as the return of native species and scientific research and education programmes.

Alan Watson Featherstone, Trees for Life's Executive Director, said: "Our work at Dundreggan is already allowing us to make significant progress in achieving our vision of a renewed Caledonian Forest. We're restoring it into a wild landscape that local residents can be proud of. We're keen for people to come along, find out more and have a great day out."

Much of the restoration work at Dundreggan will be carried out by volunteers. Trees for Life is keen to hear from individuals or companies interested in joining its Conservation Volunteer Weeks, recently selected as one of the world's Top 10 Conservation Holidays by BBC Wildlife Magazine.

People can also support Trees for Life's award-winning work restoring the Caledonian Forest through specially-dedicated trees and Groves.
