Valentine’s Groves – a climate-friendly gift for loved ones

This Valentine’s Day, romantic individuals who are concerned about the threat of climate change can choose a tree or Grove in Scotland’s Caledonian Forest as a long-term, climate-friendly gift for their loved one, says award-winning conservation charity Trees for Life.
“Every Valentine’s Day, huge quantities of flowers are air-freighted into the UK from overseas. Far from being romantic, this pumps huge quantities of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere and fuels global warming,” said Alan Watson Featherstone, Trees for Life’s Executive Director.
“A native tree or grove of trees will instead soak up carbon dioxide, create a valuable habitat for wildlife and last for decades to come.”
Every tree planted will boost the charity’s drive to plant 250,000 native trees during 2008 and 2009.
Single trees with an A4 frameable personalised certificate for the recipient of your choice cost just £15 (and you can add additional trees for £5 each). Valentine’s Groves of eight trees cost £50, including a certificate and a personalised Grove Web Page (with a photo of your choice) on the Trees for Life website at www.treesforlife.org.uk/groves. Additional trees can be added for £5 each.
Only one per cent of the Caledonian Forest survives. People can help Trees for Life to restore it through tree dedications and Groves to celebrate special occasions, as well as by planting trees during the charity’s Conservation Volunteer Weeks in the Highlands.

- Trees for Life aims to restore the Caledonian Forest to an area of 1,500 square kilometres in the Highlands west of Inverness.
- Since planting its first trees in 1991 in Glen Affric, Trees for Life has planted over 725,000 trees. Its awards include 1991 UK Conservation Project of the Year and the Millennium Marque in 2000.
- On World Environment Day 2008 (5 June), Trees for Life pledged to plant 250,000 trees by the end of 2009 as part of the UN Environment Programme’s Billion Tree Campaign. The charity exceeded its 2007 pledge of 100,000 trees by over 9,000 trees.
