A new pack created by award-winning conservation charity Trees for Life is giving people the chance to mark births and birthdays by having a specially-dedicated Grove of native trees planted in Scotland’s beautiful Caledonian Forest.

The pack is designed to make it easy for people to start their own Baby or Birthday Grove, and for family and friends to join in. The pack includes special dedication envelopes which allow people to add additional trees to the Grove with personalised messages.

The Baby and Birthday Groves cost just £50 to set up, which includes the first eight trees. Each additional tree costs £5, and these can be added at future birthdays. Once the Grove has been created, the recipient will receive a frameable gift certificate and their own page on the Trees for Life web site, complete with a photo of their own choice.

Alan Watson Featherstone, Trees for Life’s Executive Director, said: “What better way can there be to mark a child’s birth or a birthday than by creating a grove of trees which will stand forever as part of a restored Caledonian Forest?

“Groves provide a perfect opportunity for people to make a meaningful and positive contribution to the environment as part of their celebrations. Your Grove will be a fantastic habitat for wildlife, and will help to tackle climate change by reducing the build-up of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.”

New Groves will boost Trees for Life’s ambitious drive to plant 250,000 new native trees during 2008 and 2009. The Quarter of a Million Trees Appeal is the charity’s pledge to the United Nations’ Billion Tree Campaign – a global push to address climate change by encouraging people and businesses to plant seven billion trees worldwide.

The Caledonian Forest once covered much of the Scottish Highlands, with native pinewoods in a wild landscape of mountains, lochs and rivers. Today only one per cent of the original forest survives.

People wanting to make a positive, personal difference to the environment while enjoying an inspiring visit to the wild Highlands can also join Conservation Volunteer Weeks. These suit all abilities and anyone over 18 years old can take part.

Trees for Life also provides tree dedications and Groves to celebrate weddings, special occasions and Christmas, as well as memorials to loved ones.
